Department of Biophysics

The research team of the Department of Biophysics deals mainly with the study of plant stress, especially in the context of photosynthesis. We focus on the structural analysis of photosynthetic protein complexes by electron microscopy, on the formation and detection of reactive oxygen species and in vivo determination of oxidative damage. Changes in photosynthesis are monitored by measuring gasometric parameters (CO2 assimilation rate and O2 production) and parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence. We also use methods determining plant water status (psychrometry, pressure chamber) and measure the propagation of electrical potentials in plants. We participate significantly in the development of new methods and protocols for automated analysis of plant growth and development in the large-scale phenotyping of plants. The experimental data we theoretically simulate using mathematical models that describe physical background of the given processes. We study also structural and functional properties of nucleic acids. We are mainly interested in DNA modifications induced by cytostatics derived from complexes of transition metals (platinum, ruthenium, osmium).

He works as a Senior Researcher, Head of the Department of Biophysics in CRH and as a Professor of biophysics at Palacký University. He studied Biophysics and chemical physics at the Faculty of Science, Palacký University Olomouc. His research activities focus on biophysics of photosynthesis and detection of plant stress. He cooperates with commercial subjects in development of new devices for plant stress detection. He has published more than 50 papers, and is a member of several Czech as well as international scientific societies. He is involved as investigator, co-investigator or management team member of more than 25 grant projects.
