Department of Genetic Resources of Vegetables, Medicinal Plants and Special Crops CRI

The workplace holds more than 10,000 items of genetic resources of vegetable, medicinal, aromatic and culinary plants (MACP) traditionally grown in the Central European region, as well as a collection of edible and medicinal fungi, especially morels. The collections represent a significant potential source of new features and properties for breeding (e.g. phenological characteristics, resistance genes, content of nutritionally important substances and secondary metabolites). Researchers focus on collecting passport and descriptive data on individual items of vegetables and MACP, studying items of selected species in terms of morphological, phenological and yield characteristics and nutritional and content substances, or studying resistance to diseases and pests. They also evaluate the diversity of collections using molecular methods and the search for genetic markers of economically significant features for research and breeding as well as optimization of growing technologies in selected crops. Scientists are involved in the development and application of methods of chemical analysis of low-molecular substances isolated from plants, fungi and bacteria, and the development and application of molecular biology methods for the identification, characterization and monitoring of diseases of vegetables and MACP.

He majored in Analytical Chemistry and Botany at Palacký University Olomouc. After completing his studies he moved to Swedish Agricultural University in Umeå. He has been working in CRH as a Senior Researcher since 2010. In 2015 he became the Head of Central Laboratories and Research Support as well as of the Department of Genetic Resources for Vegetables, Medicinal and Special Plants (Crop Research Institute). His research is devoted to studying natural substances isolated from plants and bacteria, development of analytical methods to study phytohormones, their chemical and biochemical transformations, eventually their occurrence and interactions. Recently he has been studying cannabis and its products. He is a member of several national and international expert societies, executive boards, and an author or co-author of more than 50 scientific papers.
